The Rwanda Urological Association (RUA) has been conducting community-based urology outreaches to address the severe shortage of urologists in Rwanda—currently only 14 attendings and 19 residents, the majority based in Kigali, the capital.
These missions deliver specialized care directly to patients in regional hospitals, reducing travel distance and time, lowering the financial and logistical burden of seeking care, and minimizing the need for repeated follow-ups at tertiary centers. They also help ease the significant surgical waiting times that persist at tertiary hospitals.

Integrated education campaigns form a core part of these outreaches, addressing low literacy and limited awareness of urologic conditions— major barriers to early detection and treatment. Our 2022 outreach reached over 1000 patients in 3 provinces of the country. Over the next five years, these outreaches and visiting medical missions will not only provide essential care but also generate critical patient data to guide strategic planning, resource allocation, and quality improvement.
By uniting hands-on care, education, and data-driven insights, RUA aims to strengthen Rwanda's urologic health system and create a scalable model for other low- and middle-income countries.
